District Flood Severity Index was developed by IIT Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar
- The District Flood Severity Index (DFSI) was developed by researchers from IIT Delhi and IIT Gandhinagar to measure and rank the severity of floods in Indian districts by combining flood duration, the percentage of affected area, human impacts (deaths and injuries), and district population.
- It is developed using the India Flood Inventory with Impacts (IFI-Impacts) database containing data of variables representing the occurrence of floods and damage due to floods.
- This index provides a comprehensive, observation-driven measure of flood vulnerability and damage at the district level, which is the core unit for disaster management and planning in India.
- Since the district is the most relevant unit for planning and decision making, a DFSI would be of immense value for flood management.
