Kenya Eliminated Human African Trypanosomiasis
- World Health Organization (WHO) validated Kenya in August 2025 for eliminating human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, as a public health problem.
- This means Kenya has successfully brought HAT to a level where it is no longer a significant threat to its population.
- Kenya is the 10th country to achieve this milestone.
- HAT is a deadly parasitic disease transmitted by tsetse flies, primarily affecting rural communities in Africa.
- It has two forms: the West African form (Gambian HAT), caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, and the East African form (Rhodesian HAT), caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense.
