INS Himgiri – Third Ship of Nilgiri-Class Commissioned

  • INS Himgiri is the third ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), a series of advanced, indigenously designed stealth frigates for the Indian Navy.
  • It is the first ship of Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates to be built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.
  • It was delivered to the Indian Navy on July 31, 2025 and commissioned into the Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command on August 26, 2025.
  • This multi-mission vessel features modular construction, stealth capabilities, and state-of-the-art weapons and sensors to enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to handle diverse maritime operations.
  • The construction of seven Nilgiri-Class frigates are currently divided between MDL and GRSE.
