India’s second-largest tiger reserve – Sundarban Tiger Reserve
- The Sundarban Tiger Reserve in West Bengal is India’s second-largest tiger reserve by area.
- It moved up in ranking after its expansion was approved by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) in August 2025.
- Prior to the expansion, the Sundarban was the seventh-largest tiger reserve in India.
- An additional 1,044.68 sq km was added to the existing reserve by incorporating three tiger-inhabited ranges (Matla, Raidighi, and Ramganga) in the South 24 Parganas district.
- The expansion increased the reserve’s total area to 3,629.57 sq km.
- The largest tiger reserve in India is Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve in Andhra Pradesh.
